Nothing Phone 3a Expert View

By Shankar Choudhary

Expert Rating

8.3/10

Pros

telephoto camera, clean UI, solid performance, stereo speakers

Cons

average battery life, UFS 2.2 storage, no charger in box, IP64 only

Verdict

Nothing Phone 3a stands out mainly because of its unique design and versatile camera setup. The addition of a telephoto lens is rare in this segment, making it a great choice for photography lovers. Performance is reliable with Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, handling daily tasks and gaming smoothly. The AMOLED display is vibrant and fluid, while Nothing OS offers a clean and smooth user experience with long-term updates. Battery life is decent but not the best compared to rivals with bigger batteries. UFS 2.2 storage also feels slightly outdated. Overall, it's a stylish and camera-focused phone with balanced performance.

Questions and Answers

On current firmware, both the Phone 3a Pro and 3a have severe color shifting at 1x wide angle — the image stutters into a magenta tint when the scene should be leaning blue. One hardware design flaw is that pressing down on the middle of the screen while playing audio causes the speaker to become noticeably muffled.

The Phone 3a is bulky to carry, and its IP64 certification feels modest compared to rivals offering IP68/IP69 builds. It also uses Panda Glass instead of Gorilla Glass, which offers less scratch resistance. Charging speeds are not the best in the segment, and no charger is included in the box — buying the proprietary adapter costs over ₹2,000.

Yes, but they’re limited. Its standout AI feature is Essential Space — an AI-backed content curator accessible via the dedicated Essential button, which organises screenshots, notes, and voice memos, provides descriptions, and even reminds you of upcoming events.

Aside from Essential Space, the Phone 3a doesn’t have many of its own AI features like AI photo editing or AI writing tools — even in the gallery app, the editing suite just offers Google’s own tools such as the AI eraser.

Yes, battery life is solid. The Nothing Phone 3a lasted 15 hours and 24 minutes on Tom’s Guide’s battery test — beating the average smartphone by 5 hours. In daily use, it consistently delivers 5–5.5 hours of screen-on time, translating to roughly a full day’s worth of usage.
